Moodle using IE on home PC

Moodle using IE on home PC

I had an issue a couple of years ago with the toolbar not appearing for text boxes in Moodle - I resolved this by pressing the 'compatibility view' icon in the address bar.

Since updating IE to the newest version the issue has returned - but now there is no 'compatibility view' icon in the address bar. According to my web searches if the compatibility view icon is absent it is because the webpage is displaying correctly - but it isn't!

Any thoughts? I know I can switch to Firefox or Chrome but I like IE (and I don't like that Firefox and Chrome don't have a right click cut and paste function and instead require you to use quick keys).

Many thanks.

btw - have talked to colleagues and it isn't just me experiencing this difficulty. Another problem is that if you go in to edit the text it appears with all the formatting symbols etc. so it looks just like a jumble of letters and symbols - not easy to edit at all!

Thanks!

Hi Kerry,

Are you using IE11? I am and can see the editing toolbar in Moodle (in the places I have looked). What area in Moodle are you editing or is it everything. What about Labels for example? Do you see the toolbar there?

(You can get an extension for Chrome that allows you to R-click but have not tried it.- https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/allow-right-click/hompjdfbfmmmgflfjdlnkohcplmboaeo)

SOLVED - !!

http://windowsitpro.com/windows-7/fixing-most-not-all-ie11-compatibility-problems

They've just hidden the compatibility view function in IE 11!!

While on the Moodle homepage I clicked Tools, Compatibility View Settings, entered 'newman.ac.uk', Add, Close. Page refreshes. The toolbar then appeared and no silly formatting symbols. Phew. Hurrah.

Bob I want a job! ;)

Hi Kerry,

I see that Bob is addressing your main point, but I thought I'd chip in with regards to copying and pasting:

"I don't like that Firefox and Chrome don't have a right click cut and paste function and instead require you to use quick keys"

Chrome definately does support right click copy and paste, but ignore that because there is a quicker and easier way to do copy and paste functions within a webpage (or even from another application onto the webpage).  Try this:

  1. Highlight the text you want to copy.
  2. Place your mouse directly over the highlighted area so that the cursor changes from an arrow into a vertical bar.
  3. Press and hold the left mouse button.
  4. Drag the text to where you want to paste it and release the left mouse button.
  5. The text should at this point be copied into the new location automatically.

Occasionally if the source and destination are both fields the text might be moved rather than copied, so you may have to fall back to right clicking in those instances.  But generally the above technique is a much more effcient way to copy stuff.

Regards,

Colin

Good point.  Thanks, Colin.

Some people think that it is inconvenient to drag (as opposed to copy) because they want to paste/drop it into a different window or tab. However, you can simply drag to the tab or the application in the status bar so it really isn’t a problem if you cannot see the destination place when you start dragging.

Hi Kerry,

I've noticed this before also. What i found is that when i entered some text into a label (for example), then clicked save, and then went back into the label to edit the text - the menu would appear. It seems there's a small bug in IE11.

Have you tried this?

Thanks

Thanks for the info on cutting/copying and pasting. Good to know! However, I'd still like to be able to use IE for Moodle - I use it for everything else and it is just annoying to have to switch browsers for one site. Nazryn - just tried that with a label and it didn't work for me. I entered some text, saved, went back in - no toolbar. Most of the time I want to edit text that already exists and I can't do that easily when all the formatting symbols come up - that's even more annoying than no toolbar! Bob - yes IE 11. I have no toolbar on this text box - but I've just come back in to edit this post and it has come up properly, and not with all the formatting symbols (which is the case with editing forum posts in my other Moodle pages). The problems occur with the formatting symbols when trying to edit existing text under my Moodle topic blocks. The lack of toolbar seems to be the case for everything though. (Since posting this several people have told me they've got the same issue.) Any other ideas? Many thanks.

To add - I had paragraph breaks in the text above but when I pressed to post those disappeared and it appeared as one solid block of text. I know my students have had this problem - they've tried to post poems on a forum and can't preserve the line breaks!

You mentioned "formatting symbols". My guess is that the text was pasted from Word.  Doing so dumps lots of Microsoft formatting code into the textbox. The correct way is to use the Word button on the toolbar (which you sometimes cannot see!).

The missing toolbar issue is talked about on the Moodle.Org forum - https://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=61045 .

It's odd you have the problem because none of us in the office do. I think the best thing is for one of the e-learning team to pop over and see what's what. We'll be in touch.

Thanks for using the forum.

Bob

Yes, I'd looked at that forum thread before I contacted you - but it started in 2006 so not v helpful for IE 11 (although ppl are still posting on it!). I'd like to post my fix on there but it doesn't let 'guests' post.

Yes, always use the Word button when cutting and pasting (when the toolbar is there!).

The problem was with my home PC - not the office - as is the case with other colleagues. Perhaps the compatibility view was enabled for newman.ac.uk when the IE update was done which is why it wasn't a problem on campus...

Very pleased to have solved it though! Have told those colleagues who said they had the same issue.

Thanks for your help.
